In March of 2008, a grooming customer came into where I work and stated that he had cancer and could no longer care for his Miniature Schnauzer, "Smokey Joe". He wanted us to keep him in the kennel until a new owner could be found.
A couple of weeks went by, and no takers for Smokey Joe. As the month of March started to get to the end, we realized that spring break was coming and we'd soon be full of boarding dogs. But what about Smokey Joe? There just wasn't going to be room for him. During the time that he was "boarding", I'd gotten to know him pretty well and he was a real sweetheart. Therefore, I took him home. Bringing an un-neutered adult male into a home with 4 other male dogs was going to be difficult, but I am glad to say that I was very proud of all my boys- they didn't exactly welcome the newcomer with open paws, but there were no death threats either.
We've changed his name a tad, to "Joey", and he's been here a couple of weeks now and things are going pretty well. He's not used to living in a home with other dogs but he's starting to get used to it.
Don't be fooled by the ears.. they're not cropped- those are naturally standing Schnauzer ears. We know he's not the perfect example of a Miniature Schnauzer- he's much bigger than most Mini's (taller and longer), and those ears tend to speak for themselves. But being a Schnauzer lover, my heart couldn't take the thought of this guy being put in a shelter or in the hands of anyone else- he's here to stay. I didn't really need or want a 5th dog, but he needed me, and that's what matters most.
November 2008
Joey is still doing absolutly wonderful. He has really worked his way into the hearts of everyone and is an incredible dog to live with. A couple of months ago his previous owner mentioned wanting him back- and was actually upset with me because I let Joey sleep on the bed. He said that Joey was trained to never get on the bed. The funny thing is- as soon as Joey went into my bedroom, the first thing he did was get up on my bed! I believe Joey has a better life here, and he's not leaving- ever. He's my baby and I'll do whatever it takes to keep him.
