Russian Toy Information
In the early 20th century, the English Toy Terrier was one of the most popular breeds in Russia. From 1920-1950 the breeding of purebred toy terriers came to a halt and the number of dogs fell greatly. In the mid 1950's a handful of breeders began trying to bring the breed back. Most of the dogs being used in the breeding programs had no pedigrees and may not have even been purebred dogs.
The Russian Toy has two varieties- long-haired and smooth-haired. Colors can be black and tan, brown and tan, blue and tan. Also red of any shade with or without black or brown overlay. Richer shades are best desired for all colors.
They can be between 8-11 inches tall and should weigh around 6 1/2 pounds.
Unlike many toy breeds, the Russian Toy is not a timid dog. They are very active and lively and welcome friendly strangers.
Other names for the breed include Russkiy Toy, Russischer Zwerghund, Russischer Toy, and Toy Terrier.
In 2008 the Russian Toy was entered into the AKC's Foundation Stock Service (FSS). This is a very rare breed in the United States and you may run into a great deal of difficulty finding one here. If you are set on getting a Russian Toy, you may have to consider importing one.
