Russell Terrier Information
The Russell Terrier is a Jack Russell Terrier that is 10-12 inches tall. The Jack Russell Terrier/Parson Russell Terrier has changed in body type greatly from what the original breed began as, and the Russell Terrier is basically the "original type".
The AKC's Parson Russell Terrier is taller (12-15 inches) and shorter backed with a deeper chest than the Russell Terrier. The Russell Terrier has a body of a true terrier hunting dog- able to get down in holes after vermin.
Russell Terriers are small dogs with a very strong hunting instinct. They're very playful and have an enormous amount of energy. Training must begin early and be firm (not heavy handed) and loving.
Russell Terriers are dogs who actually think out a situation and always go for what they want. If they see a fence they want to get past, they will try to jump it- if that fails, they will dig under it- they are always plotting for what they want.
Those who rely on an invisible fence to contain their dog should not consider a Russell Terrier- they will ignore the invisible fence and go after any fleeing critter- rabbit, squirrel and even stray cats.
