Presa Canario Information
The Presa Canario is a native of the islands of Tenerife and gran Canaria, in the Canary Archipelago. They are a result of the crosses between the Majorero, a cattle dog originating from the islands, and molosser dogs brought to the Archipelago.
These crossings created an ethnic grouping of dogs of "Presa" type. They are medium sized, brindle or fawn colored marked with white, robust, characteristic of a molosser.
During the 16th and 17th centuries, the population increased greatly. There are mentions of them in historical writings prior to the conquest, mainly in the "Documents of the Town Council" which explained the functions that the dogs of that time fulfilled. They were used as a guardian and cattle dog, as well as being there to subdue the cattle for the butchers.
Presa's are extremely versatile dogs. Their temperament is balanced and they have great self security. They are always very watchful and alert, and will readily accept a friendly stranger. They bond with their family quickly and keep a watchful eye over them.
There has been some bad press regarding this breed, but a few bad examples does not represent this entire breed. There are those out there who do not breed responsibly and want dogs to be aggressive at a very early age-this is NOT good practice, and you should not purchase a dog who has dogs such as this. These dogs are not meant to be aggressive, but to be protectors.
Before purchasing this breed, it is recommended that you do your homework on them. Check out several breeders, and never buy a dog if the breeder advertises they have a "rare" type-rare typically means badly bred. No dog is for everyone and this may not be the breed for you. A good breeder will be evaluating you as an owner more than you will be evaluating them as a breeder.
The Presa Canario requires a very dominant owner who understand the alpha nature in canines. No member of the family can be uncomfortable around the dog. Presa Canario's make outstanding guard dogs. Just their appearance is a deterrent not to mention their ability to confront any intruder. In the wrong hands this dog can be dangerous, but with the right owner it can make a nice, devoted companion. This is not a breed for first time dog owners, novice owners or even push over owners who let their dogs get away with everything.
The main health concern with the breed is Hip Dysplasia.
