Norfolk Terrier Information
The Norfolk Terrier is one of the smallest of the working terriers. In England at the turn of the century, working terriers from stables in Cambridge, Market harborough, and Norwich were used to develop a breed recognized by the English Kennel Club in 1932 as the Norwich Terrier.
In the early days, there was a diversity in type, size, color, coat and ear carriage. When the Norwich breed standard was drawn up the drop ear and the prick ear terriers remained one breed. The English Kennel Club recognized them as two breeds in 1964. The Norfolk was the drop ear variety, the Norwich was the prick ear.
The Norfolk was just the right size to ride in a basket alongside his foxhunting master on horseback. After the English Foxhound had forced the fox to go underground, the terriers would be sent after the fox. These dogs had to be very courageous and feisty against the fox.
The Norfolk Terriers are active, courageous, affectionate, balanced, and without any nervousness or quarrelsomeness. They are easy to train but need consistent rules to follow. These little dogs love everyone and are good with children. He will dig and bark if left outside for long periods of time with nothing to occupy his quick mind. They love toys and balls and are generally good with other pets, but can be difficult to housebreak. Norfolk Terriers should not be let off of their lead unless secure. They are okay joggers for short distances. Norfolk Terriers sometimes suffer from jealousy.
The Norfolks coat is hard, wiry and straight. It should be one and a half to two inches long, lying close to the body with a definite undercoat. The color should be all shades of red, wheaten, black and tan, or grizzle.
