Irish Water Spaniel Information
In the late 1100's, dogs found in southern Ireland below the River Shannon were called Shannon Spaniels, Irish Water Spaniels, Rat Tail Spaniels or Whip Tail Spaniels.
There are no records on which breeds were used to create the Irish Water Spaniel, however it is believed that the Poodle, Portuguese Water Dog, Barbet and other water spaniels may have been used.
The Irish Water Spaniel is often called the clown of the spaniel family due to their unique appearance. They are the tallest of the spaniel breeds, standing at 22 to 24 inches tall.
They love water, so a family that is active in lake activity would be well suited for the Irish Water Spaniel.
Irish Water Spaniels adore their family but can be very standoffish with strangers.
Health concerns in the breed include allergies and skin conditions.
