Interview with Pryde Boxers
How did you first get involved in Boxers?
I was inexperienced when getting my first Boxers and soon learned through a mentor and good friend what a good Boxer was, they helped me establish a line with many years of good breeding back behind it and something I am proud to have carry our Kennel name now.
What was the most appealing part of Boxers
I love most everything about the breed, they are fabulous family dogs, great athletes, they are protective of our family yet do not know a stranger.
What were the drawbacks to the breed?
Health issues concerning their hearts unfortunately and cancer.
Would you recommend Boxers to the novice dog owner?
depending on their life style. A Boxer is an active dog and not for an apartment type setting and someone who stays in.
What are the known problems in the breed?
Known problems are S.A.S., cancer and B.C.M.
What are you doing to help with those problems?
I have purchased my own holter for one of the tests that need to be done as well as try to keep up with the most current break through science may have for our breed.
Sadly there are pet stores/backyard breeders nearly everywhere now, you do you get people to understand about the quality of your dogs compared to those?
First I ask explain to them about knowing what is back behind my dogs, if any health problems arose and when. I provide a picture pedigree for most to show what good boxers should look like. I then explain to them where MOST pet stores get their puppies from. Generally the conversation lead to be an infomative hour to 2 hour long conversation.
What added problems are seen in the backyard bred/pet store dogs that are not in well bred dogs?
Mainly the poor quality of health in BYB/pet stores. The breeders that send puppies to them or have them do not test for health issues.
Do you recommend Boxers to people with children of all ages?
Yes!!!
What type of excercise schedule to you recommend for Boxers?
Every single day they must have a good excercise period/playtime. As much as possible.
What type of feeding do you recommend for Boxers?
I reccomend what mine are fed but also give a few alternatives for foods I can reccomend.
When selling a puppy, how do you decide on the sale price?
After evaluation is done by several eyes to determine who is a pet quality and who is a show quality puppy. Some are determined immediatly at birth as a pet such as white puppies or mismarked puppies. But we like to wait until an evaluation is done.
What is your greatest expense with your dogs?
hard to say, if vet care is needed no expense is spared, I feed natural foods as well as vitamin supplements and fish oil and partial raw diet, then there is always the toys, I can not walk into a store without picking up dog toys and since I own more than one dog I can not get just one toy.
Would you recommend your breed to people with other animals?
absolutely
Would you recommend Boxers to someone without a fenced in yard?
depending on their ability and devotion to training, but I MUCH prefer a fenced yard.
What is the best way to keep Boxerss coat looking great?
A good diet, porper care all around.
When your dogs have finished with their show career and are no longer being bred, what do you do with them?
Spayed, neutered and they become couch potatoes.
What measures do you take to screen potential puppy buyers?
application, vet reference, personal references, family references, phone calls, emails and home visits....
