Interview with Schwarz Kennels
How did you first get involved in the American Alsatian?
Founder. Over 45 yrs breeding, training, grooming, showing of dogs.
What was the most appealing part of the breed ?
Non barking, calm dogs.
What were the drawbacks?
look to much like a shepherd
Would you recommend American Alsatians to the novice dog owner?
yes
What are the known problems in the breed?
none
What are you doing to help with problems?
breeding dogs properly and outcrossing for desired traits keeps hy-bred vigor in the lines and health issues to a minimum.
Sadly there are pet stores/backyard breeders nearly everywhere now, you do you get people to understand about the quality of your dogs compared to those?
we are the only breeder of this new rare breed of dog so far. Our breed club has strict rules and we are UNCONVINSIONAL in the dog breeding acre as we think out of the norm and do not FOLLOW other breeds into the health nightmare.
What added problems are seen in the backyard bred/pet store dogs that are not in well bred dogs?
There are no backyard breeders nor any of our dogs in pet stores
Do you recommend American Alsatians to people with children of all ages?
yes
What type of excercise schedule to you recommend?
easy going, walking when the family walks together.
What type of feeding do you recommend?
raw plus kibbles high in meat and protien
When selling a puppy, how do you decide on the sale price?
the pup that is tested high in character and temperament is higher priced
What is your greatest expense with your dogs?
feeding
Would you recommend your breed to people with other animals (cats, dogs, rodents)?
yes
Would you recommend your breed to someone without a fenced in yard?
yes
What is the best way to keep the coat looking great?
brush and comb the coat. bath when dirty only. These dogs shed off dirt.
When your dogs have finished with their show career and are no longer being bred, what do you do with them?
We do not show our dogs in the convientional ways. Beauty is NOT the foremost in appeal there fore this breed is not judged on its beauty. When the dog is finished breeding it goes up for sale and is adopted out.
What measures do you take to screen potential puppy buyers?
We chat over emails and we have a form that helps us pick pups that fit the new owners life style.
Anything else you would like to add?
Our dogs are bred not to bark and have almost no prey drive. This means they do not chase things or get hyper and out of control. Since the energy level is low, this dog pays attention easier therefore learns faster.
