Interview with Dunnford Boxers

Love of Breeds

How did you first get involved in your Boxers?

We have been involved with several breeds and while reading about other breeds we feel in love with the Boxer breed.
What was the most appealing part of Boxers?

Their intelligence and energy level.
What were the drawbacks to Boxers?
Lack of tolerance of different weather conditions.
Would you recommend Boxers to the novice dog owner?

Yes
What are the known problems in the Boxers?

Heart and cancer health issues.
What are you (and other breeders) doing to help with those problems?
We as well as many others perform testing in regards to the heart prior to any breeding. Thyroid and hip tests are also performed. If any negative heart test results there is never any breeding.
Sadly there are pet stores/backyard breeders nearly everywhere now, you do you get people to understand about the quality of your dogs compared to those?:

We explain our health tests and the importance of having them done. This should always be done with any breed. All breeders should be required to have these test completed prior to any breeding. All health records should be kept documented for all of your dogs so that you can keep track of any health issues in the lines. This way you can be aware of any possible future health issues and not breed or re breed if you do find any.By doing so it will help prevent the amount of sick dogs that die so young. There are to many breeders that don't understand the importance of the health testing on the breed prior to breeding. Hopefully this will be a road to educating them.
What added problems are seen in the backyard bred/pet store dogs that are not in well bred dogs?
Unknown health issues that are passed on unknowingly.
Do you recommend your Boxers to people with children of all ages?

Yes as long as they educated themselves and their boxer on obedience and exercise. What type of excercise schedule to you recommend for your breed?: Daily. Routine exercise and socialization is very important.
What type of feeding do you recommend for Boxers?

We recommend Royal Canin. Never any table food.
When selling a puppy, how do you decide on the sale price?

By the quality of our Boxers.
What is your greatest expense with your dogs?

Health testing, show costs.
Would you recommend Boxers to people with other animals (cats, dogs, rodents)?

yes
Would you recommend your breed to someone without a fenced in yard?

yes. As long as they are aware that any breed needs supervision at all times. Even with a fenced yard there should still be supervision.
What is the best way to keep a Boxer's coat looking great?:

Good diet and grooming.
When your dogs have finished with their show career and are no longer being bred, what do you do with them ?

They live with us till it is their time to pass.
What measures do you take to screen potential puppy buyers?

We require an application to be filled out, vet information, references. We will drive by in with in driving distance.
Anything else you would like to add?

The Boxer breed is an absoltuly passionate, loving breed. Family devotion is right at the top with this breed.
