English Shepherd Information
The English Shepherd was originally brought to the British Isles by Caesar when he invaded in 55 BC. Romans used these dogs to herd the livestock brought along to feed the troops. As the livestock was depleted, surplus dogs were left along the way and used by local natives. These dogs who were left behind were bred with existing types of dogs with similar herding talents to help intensify those instincts. The dogs bred with these dogs were the Scotch Collie, Border Collie and other working dogs.
The English Shepherd was brought to the American colonies by some of the first settlers and followed the development of the United States from east to west. They have been highly prized for use on livestock and protecting homes.
Males should stand between 19 to 23 inches tall and weigh 45 - 70 pounds, females 18 to 22 inches tall and weigh 40 - 50 pounds. They can be tri colored, black and white, black and tan or sable and white.
The English Shepherd has proven useful for livestock work, companionship, search and rescue as well as a watch dog. These dogs have great agility, are hard working and devoted to their family. Their calm steadiness, high senses and intelligence make it a wonderful for an active family that can give the dog plenty of work to do.
