There is some evidence that the English Setter was originally produced from crosses of the Spanish Pointer, Irish Water Spaniel and English Springer Spaniel.
The English Setter was a trained bird dog in England more than 400 years ago. They have retained their popularity since they were introduced in the United States mainly because of their usefulness and appearance.
The English Setter is very gentle and friendly. They do wonderful with children of all ages. They crave affection and love to please their owners. They are very active when outside but fairly calm when in the house.
English Setter males should be 24 to 27 inches tall and weigh between 55 - 88 pounds, females 23 to 26 inches tall and weigh 55 - 80 pounds. Their coats should be flat without curls, and can be orange belton, blue belton, tricolor, lemon belton or liver belton.
English Setters are very active dogs. They need an owner who understands that they will thrive most by being outdoors with their owner, playing or hunting. These are sporting dogs and will go after any type of prey they spot- birds, squirrels, rabbits, chipmunks, etc.
English Setters are exceptional family dogs- they adore their family and enjoy playing with children.
Health concerns with the English Setter include Hip Dysplasia, allergies, and deafness.
