Louis Dobermann was a tax collector in Germany who would collect these taxes by going door to door. Many people were unwilling to pay their dues, and Mr. Dobermann began working on creating a breed who would provide him "back up" in those cases. The Doberman Pinscher came from mixing the old shorthaired shepherd dog stock with mixtures of the Rottweiler, black and tan terrier, and German Pinscher.
The Doberman gained all of the excellent qualities from the breeds used in their creation. They have proven themselves not only as a wonderful friend, but also a guardian. They are highly intelligent and able to absorb and retain their training lessons.
Doberman Pinschers have been used for a police and war dog, hunting and guarding. By looking at the Doberman, you may not think they have great muscular power, however they are very muscular and compact dogs. At first glance, many even underestimate their weight by 15-20 pounds.
Doberman Pinschers are not the vicious dogs that you see in the movies. It is actually very rare that you will see a Doberman in such a way these days. Dobermans are very loving dogs who adore their families, and most tend to welcome friendly strangers. Dobermans will protect their territory and family against those they know shouldn't be around, however having an owner bring a guest into the home will not be a problem.
Many Dobermans can be dog aggressive. They do well with pets they're raised with however many have same sex aggression especially toward dogs they're not familiar with. This an be limited with proper socialization beginning at an early age. Once your Doberman puppy is vaccinated, get him out into the world to experience new sights and sounds and meet up with various people and animals. Having positive experiences with new things at a young age will help him to not be afraid or aggressive towards these things later in life.
Dobermans do tend to excel at Schutzhund, which is protection training. This still does not mean they are in any way vicious. A protection trained dog and a vicious dog are totally different things. Schutzhund has three parts of training, obedience, tracking and protection work. Protection training is similar to the methods for dogs in police work.
Dobermans come in several colors. Black & tan, Red, blue (grey), and fawn. Grooming a Doberman is very simple. Bathing and brushing as needed, nail trimming and ear cleaning regularly.
Health concerns in the breed include Hip Dysplasia, cardiomyopathy, thyroid problems, wobbler's syndrome, renal dysplasia, autoimmune disorder, allergies and Panosteitis. Purchasing your Doberman from a reputable breeder who screens their dogs for health problems prior to breeding will help to assure that your Doberman puppy will not be as likely to have these problems.
