Border Terrier Information

The Border Terrier gets its name due to the fact that it comes from the border of England and Scotland. Their original purpose was to catch fox that were raiding the farmers livestock.
The Border Terrier has the ideal Terrier temperament. By nature they are good tempered, affectionate, very obedient and easily trained. They are a large dog in the body of a small dog-they do not realize their size, and will not back down in a confrontation, even with a much larger animal.
Though there are some who still use them for farm work and even in Earthdog Trials
, their main use today is as a companion. They do very well if raised with other animals, however will still chase cats if given the chance. Usually it's all about the chase in a home setting, so most of the time it isn't anything to worry about.
With other dogs, Border Terriers are usually fine, however they must be raised with other dogs- you may run into problems if your Border Terrier is 5 years old and you try to bring in another dog. If you have a dog, then get a Border Terrier, most likely there will be no more problems than you'd have happen in any other multiple dog home. Keep in mind though, Terriers tend to want to be top dog with other dogs and will fight to keep their place in the pack. Owning multiple terriers is possible, but not recommended for the novice pet owner.
Border Terriers should never be let out without being in a fenced in area or on lead. If they spot a rabbit, squirrel or other small animal they will take off after it and ignore your calls for him to return.
Border Terriers are double coated. They have a very soft undercoat that is covered by a thick wiry outercoat. The coat requires stripping/plucking about every 8-10 weeks and should be done by a groomer who is experienced with terrier coats. This breed should not be clipped (shaved), which is why you need an experienced terrier groomer. They shed very little, and are often a good choice for those with allergies.
Health problems associated with Border Terriers include heart defects, eye problems, thyroid problems, epilepsy, allergies and luxating patellas.
