Barbet Information
The Barbet originated in France in the 1600's. Although the precise ancestry of the Barbet is unknown, it is a very old breed and is thought to be the ancestor of such breeds as the
Poodle,
Irish Water Spaniel, and
Otterhound. It is also thought to resemble the now extinct English Water Dog.
The coat of the Barbet is thick and woolly, protecting the dog from freezing water conditions. It is shiny and may be curly or wavy, with a rather becoming tasseled appearance. The Barbet has played a central role in the development of a majority of the great water dogs.
The Barbet not only retrieved water fowl, but would also retrieve the fallen arrows of the hunters who had missed their targets.
Other names for the Barbet include Griffon d'Arreta Poil Laineux.
