Australian Terrier Information

The Australian Terrier was created to produce a fast, sturdy, rough, weatherproof and fearless little dog. They were developed by crossing the Dandie Dinmont Terrier, Skye Terrier, Dandie Dinmont Terrier, Yorkshire Terrier, Manchester Terrier, Irish Terrier and the Cairn Terrier. They were originally known as the Rough-Coated Terrier.

The settlers needed a dog like this as they expanded the frontiers of their country. These dogs helped control the rodents and snakes on the waterfronts, farms, and near cattle. Sometimes they were used as alarm dogs as well since they have excellent hearing and great eyesight. They do very well in the city or on the farm and can adapt to any climate or terrain.

They are less scrappy toward strange dogs than most terriers tend to be, but if provoked they will fight fiercely. Like most terriers, the Australian Terrier has strong instincts to chase and catch small fleeing creatures.

The Australian Terrier was the first Australian breed to be recognized and shown in Australia. They are the smallest of the working terriers.

Australian Terriers are small dogs, standing at 10-11 inches tall. They have a weatherproof double coat that is harsh and straight. They can be blue and tan, solid sandy or solid red colored. Like most terriers, they do not shed very much.

They want to please their owner and are easily obedience trained, easier than most terrier breeds. They are not snappish, however they do enjoy barking. They are very good with dog friendly children who aren't prone to teasing dogs. They get along well with other pets, however may chase small animals outdoors such as rabbits and squirrels. Australian Terriers should never be allowed off lead when not in a fenced in area as they may take off after a small fleeing animal.

Australian Terriers adore their family, however may be very suspicious of strangers. Strangers may even find them to be unfriendly dogs. However, their suspicious nature makes them excellent guardians of the home.
