Anatolian Shepherd Information
The Anatolian Shepherd originated in Turkey. They were developed to be able to withstand the harsh climate and have since evolved to endure the nomadic lifestyle as shepherds. For centuries they were used as a combat dog in war and for hunting. They were mainly valued for the battles they fought with the wolves. As a sheepdog, they are strong enough to never be bothered with fatigue or bad weather.
The first Anatolians were imported to the United States in 1968 though the first successful breeding program didn't begin until 1970.
These are large dogs, males standing at 29 inches tall and should weigh 110-150 pounds, females 27 inches tall and weigh 80 - 120 pounds. Their coat can be short, around one inch, or rough being around 4 inches. They can be any color or group of colors.
Some are prone to hypothyroidism and entropion, Hip Dysplasia is rare in the breed but is possible. Anatolians immunity tends to take longer to develop than with other breeds so they should be given extra vaccinations against parvo virus.
