American Foxhound Information
In 1650 Robert Brooke sailed for America, and he brought his pack of hounds with him. These hounds were the root of many American hounds and remained in the family for nearly 300 years.
In 1808, the Gloucester Foxhunting Club imported some of the best English hounds and the Baltimore Hunt Club made many importations from England as well. The Foxhound in this country are used for four purposes, field trials, hunting, trailing, pack hounds.
The American Foxhounds are similar to the English Foxhound, however they are lighter and taller, have a keener sense of smell and are faster in the chase.
American Foxhounds are very sweet, affectionate and gentle at home with their owners, however are extremely brave when on the hunt. They are excellent with children and due to their pack hunting background, they get along great with other dogs. They shouldn't be trusted with non-canine pets, such as cats.
Your American Foxhound should never be allowed to be off lead when not in a fenced in area. They will take off after a scent and follow it as far as they can.
Field type American Foxhounds usually do not make good pets since they prefer the outdoors and hunting so much. If you're considering one for a pet, you should look into show lines for this purpose.
Male American Foxhounds should stand 22 to 25 inches tall, females 21 to 24 inches. They should weigh between 65-75 pounds in proper condition.
In general, they're a very healthy breed. The biggest issue is ear infections, so checking their ears weekly for signs of problems is required.
