Wetterhoun Information
The Wetterhoun was most likely descended from the Old Water Dog, a breed that contributed to a number of modern-day spaniel types but is now extinct. The Wetterhoun was developed at the same time as the Stabyhoun, and in the early days both of these dogs were bred together, however that has now stopped. Wetterhoun specialize in locating and killing otters (the fisherman's competitors for fish). After otters became more manageable in the northern parts of the Netherlands, the breed was used to hunt small land mammals such as polecats, and to guard farms. The Wetterhoun is a rugged, well-built, and effective gun dog capable of flushing and retrieving on both land and water.
Wetterhouns are very loyal to their owners and families, and do very well with children.
They should be 21-23 inches tall, and should weigh 33-44 pounds. The Wetterhoun's coat is curly and oily. Twice a year they go through their shedding stage and will need to have their coat thoroughly combed to remove the dead coat. Over-combing will cause their natural coat curl to fade. Accepted colors are plain black or brown, black and white, brown and white or brown roan.
