Thai Ridgeback Information
The Thai Ridgeback developed in eastern Thailand. The breed was kept very pure due to their isolation. Descriptions of the breed can be found as far back as the 17th century. Their name came from the ridge that they have going down their back-a trait only seen in a few dog breeds.
Until recently the Thai Ridgeback was relatively unknown outside of eastern Thailand and is very rare elsewhere. This breed is a good watchdog, guard dog and hunting dog, but also makes a lovely companion. Tough and active with excellent jumping ability. It is a very active and alert dog but also a bit aloof towards strangers. The Thai Ridgeback needs an owner who understands the breed, and is able to handle the training of the breed. A Thai who is poorly raised can be aggressive so they require an owner who is able to put in time to properly work with the dog.
The coat is short and smooth, with a ridge of hair growing in the opposite direction of the rest of the coat. They can be colored black, light chestnut red, silver and blue. Males should stand 24 to 26 inches tall, females 22 to 24 inches.
