Standard Schnauzer Information
The Standard Schnauzer originated with the crossing of the black German Poodle and gray wolf Spitz and wirehaired pinscher stock. From the Pinscher element the Schnauzer gained the fawn colored undercoat, and from the wolf Spitz the Schnauzer inherited the typical salt and pepper coat.
Contrary to popular belief, the Giant Schnauzer, Miniature Schnauzer and Standard Schnauzer are three separate breeds. The Standard Schnauzer was the first of the Schnauzers, and the Giant and Mini were created by using Standard Schnauzers crossed with other breeds.
In the 15th and 16th centuries, Standard Schnauzers were held in high favor as household companions. They used to be considered a terrier, but due to the fact that they were so often used as a working dog in Germany, they are now classified as working dogs. The Standard Schnauzer has been used to catch rats, guard farm carts, carry messages during wars, assist the red cross, serve with the police and they can also retrieve and herd cattle.
Standard Schnauzers can be either solid black or salt & pepper. They require professional grooming ever 4-6 weeks. Pets should be clippered, but for showing it is required that their coats are stripped (plucked) to maintain the wiry coat. It is very important to comb the legs, chest and beard on a regular basis on both pets and show dogs, in order to prevent tangles. This is especially important when the dog gets wet from rain, snow or dew on the grass. The most effective way to keep your Schnauzer free from tangles is to brush upward from the feet to the chest, then using a wire comb, comb down from the chest to the feet. This will help assure that you are getting all the hairs, clear down to the skin. Many pet owners simply tend to just brush the legs and do not actually get to all of the hair, which can lead to a great deal of tangles right against the skin.
Standard Schnauzers are a fairly healthy breed. The main health concern is Hip Dysplasia, and that tends to be rare with the breed. Standards are very active, even into their older years. They typically live between 13 to 16 years old.
