Stabyhoun Information
The Stabyhoun is a gundog that was found as early as 1800. In earlier times they were used for small game and birds. They turned out to be a great mole catcher, pointer, tracker and a good watchdog.
Though the English and German breeds are more popular, the Stabyhoun is still used today as a gundog. Since the breed used to be mainly owned by poor farmers, they needed an all around great dog since they could only afford to keep one dog.
The look of the Stabyhoun hasn't changed much, though in earlier times they were often mixed with the Wetterhoun since only working ability was a factor in breeding in those days. In 1942 the breed was officially acknowledged and crossbreeding stopped.
Stabyhoun's should stand 19 to 23 inches and weigh around 45 to 55 pounds. They can be black, brown and orange with white markings, spotting or roan in the white is also seen.
