The Spinone Italiano is Italy's all purpose hunting dog. They have been referred to as a Griffon since the name Griffon designated the hunting dogs of continental Europe, however the Spinone is more of a pointer.
Nearly every country in Europe has had thier own type of pointer for at least three centuries, each of which developed a dog according to their needs. The Piedmonte district of northwest Italy is mainly responsible for the development of the Spinone. They are said to outrank all other Italian gundogs as an incredible worker.
Spinone's get along well with friendly strangers. They don't welcome them in the manner that you'd get from a Labrador Retriever, however they are friendly. Even though they welcome friendly strangers easily, they will alert you to any abnormal sounds or sights around your home, and if someone knocks on your door.
Spinone's do very well with other pets and tend to adore children. They don't do well living outside since they adore their family so much and want to be with them. If unhappy they can become very vocal or destructive.
They should stand 20-26 inches tall and weigh about 56 pounds. Their coat is weatherproof, short, rough, hard and wiry. The undercoat is smooth and very dense. Their color may be all white, or white with yellow or light brown patches.
Health concerns in the breed include Hip Dysplasia and Bloat.
