The ancestors of the Smooth Fox Terrier is thought to include the smooth coated black and tan terrier, the Bull Terrier, Greyhound and Beagle.

The Smooth Fox Terrier preceded the Wire Fox Terrier in the show ring by 15 years. They were first classified as sporting dogs due to their keen noses, great eyesight, stamina and fox hunting drive.

Early on, breeders literally crosses Wire Fox Terriers with Smooth Fox Terriers to give the Wire's a predominantly white pigment, cleaner cut head and more classical outline.

The coat of the Smooth Fox Terrier should be smooth and dense. White should be the base color, with colored markings.
