Smalandsstovare Information
The Smalandsstovare originated in Sweden in the 1200's. They were recognized by the Swedish Kennel Club in 1921. An early breeder, Baron von Essen, had a preference for the short-tailed individuals that were sometimes born, and helped to establish this trait in the breed. The basic form of this breed may date back to the Middle Ages.
Docking of the tail is not permitted in the Smalandsstovare, but many are born without their tails. This breed also requires a great deal of exercise. They should be between 18-20 inches tall and weigh 33-40 pounds. Another name for the Smalandsstovare is the Smalands Hound.
