Shetland Sheepdog Information
![]() |
The Shetland Sheepdog traces back to the Border Collie which was transported to the Shetland Islands and crosed with small longhaired dogs. Crosses were made from time to time with Collies.
Though the Shetland Sheepdog resembles a smaller version of the Collies, they are not miniature collies, they are two seperate breeds.
The Shetland SHeepdog's instinct to guard property and give watchdog warnings make them invaluable for work as farm dogs and home protectors. They have great ability to run fast and gracefully, jump obsticles easily and get their job done.
They should stand between 13 to 16 inches tall atthe shoulders. They have a double coat consisting of a short dense undercoat covered by a long, straight outercoat. Coloring can be black, blue merle and sable. Grooming for this breed is not very difficult, but is time consuming. They have a double coat, and need combed regularly to help prevent matting. Their feet and hind legs may need trimming, as well as nail trimming and ear cleaning.
