Sarplaninac Information
The Sarplaninac was named after the Shar Plania Mountain range where the breed is most common. The breed is mainly found in that area, however can also be found in other mountain areas such as Korab, Bistra, Mavrova and Pelister. Due to the isolation of this breed, they have kept many of the original traits of the breed.
The Sarplaninac is mainly used as a livestock guardian dog. They protect large flocks from bear, wolf, fox, lynx and even humans. They are extremely protective of their land, flock and their families.
The Sarplaninac is very reserved with those it does not know. This is not a breed that will run up and wag his tail to everyone he sees like a Labrador Retriever would. Many can be dog aggressive, and this breed is also very territorial.
Males tend to be 24 inches tall and weigh between 77-99 pounds. Females are 22 1/2 inches tall and weigh between 66-88 pounds.
Their coats are about 4-5 inches long and can be any solid color from white to very dark brown. The most common color is gray. The coloring may vary from darker to lighter shades.
