Saluki Information
The Saluki was the only dog of the time allowed to sleep on the carpet of the Sheikh's tent. So great was the esteem in which the dog was held that his body was often mummified like the bodies of the Pharaohs themselves. The remains of numerous dogs have been found in ancient tombs of the Upper Nile region.
Salukis were first brought into England in 1840. They were then known as Persian Greyhounds since these three came from Persia. There was no real interest in the breed, however, until the first Arabian Saluki was imported in 1895 from the kennels of Prince Abdulla in Transjordania.
England later learned more about the Saluki from army officers stationed in the East during World War I. Other dogs, either prizes of war or the gifts of friendly tribes were brought home.
Saluki's come in a wide variety of colors, including White, cream, fawn, golden, red, grizzle, silver grizzle, deer grizzle, tri-color (white, black and tan), and variations of these colors. Their coats are smooth and silky.
Saluki need room to roam, a very high fenced yard (exceptional jumping skills), loves comfort and should have a soft bed away from any drafty areas.
