When it became possible for man to kill birds, many different breeds of dogs were used to find and retrieve. At the time, all dogs used for this purpose were called retrievers. Eventually, dogs were selectively bred to perfect this skill. The Retriever Proper, a large black dog, had come into existence in Britain by the early 19th century.
