Rafeiro Do Alentejo Information
The Rafeiro Do Alentejo originated in Portugal in the 1800's. The Spanish Mastiff may have contributed to its ancestry, along with the Estrela Mountain Dog.
This powerful dog has a body not unlike that of the Saint Bernard, but it has a head shaped like a bear's. This is the largest of the Portuguese breeds and is an imposing animal. Males should be 26 to 29 inches tall and females 25 to 27.5 inches tall.
The Rafeiro Do Alentejo has an aggressive nature, as well as a strong independent streak. They should be 30 inches tall and weigh 95-110 pounds. Other names for the Rafeiro Do Alentejo is the Portuguese Watchdog and the Alentejo Mastiff.
The Rafeiro do Alentejo has been recorded in the American Kennel Clubs Foundation Stock Service (FSS) since 2005.
