The Pyrenean Shepherd is a sheepherding dog that originated in France. Many came to North America in the 19th century with flocks of sheep that were imported from the Pyrenees Mountains. The dogs were mainly smooth-faced blue merles, and were essential in founding the Australian Shepherd.
The Pyrenean Shepherd has two varieties, smooth faced and rough faced.They can be many colors including shades of fawn from tan to copper with or without a mixture of black hairs. Merles of many tones, brindle, black, and black with white parkings. The breed also has double dewclas on their back legs. They should be 15-18 inches tall at the shoulders.
In 2009 the Pyrenean Shepherd was admitted into the American Kennels Clubs herding group.
