The Pharaoh Hound is one of the oldest domesticated dogs in recorded history. They were treasured for their great hunting ability as well as their affinity for close family relationships.

The origins of this dog is in Egypt, and they were carried by Phoenician traders to the island of Malta well before the birth of Christ. The breeders of Malta maintained a purity of breed type for over 2,000 years.

In Malta, the Pharaoh Hound was bred to hunt rabbit and only the best hunters were used in selective breeding programs. In 1979 a silver coin bearing the likeness of a standing Pharaoh Hound was minted to commemorate the occasion of the dog being declared the National Dog of Malta.

They were first imported into England in the early 1930s. In 1967 the first Pharaoh Hound was brought to the United States. The first litter was whelped in 1970.

They are intelligent, friendly and affectionate. They have great speed combined with his alertness and agility, which allow them to hunt by sight as well as scent. The outstanding feature of the Pharaoh Hound is their beautiful amber eyes.

They are very fond of children and are always willing to play. They have no "doggy odor," even when they're wet. Their willingness to please allows them to be trained quickly which makes them excel at hunting, obedience and coursing.

Their coats are short and glossy and can be tan/rich tan/chestnut with white markings. Males are 23-25 inches tall, females 21-24 inches.
