Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen Information
Most of the French breeds came in large and small versions, and were also used for different prey. The Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen was used for large game, while the Petit was used for small game. The Petit and Grand came from the same litters at that time.
In 1909 the breed standard recognized them by their two types- the Grand standing at 13-15 inches, and the Petit distinguished by its smaller size only. In the 1950's a new standard was published, and the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen was given an official standard of its own and considered to be a separate breed.
They were admitted to AKC registration in 1990, and became eligible to compete at AKC-licensed shows in 1991.
The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen should be between 13 and 15 inches for both males and females. Their colors should be white with any combination of lemon, orange, black, tricolor or grizzle markings. They are happy, independent and willing to please.
Health concerns in the breed are Neck Pain Syndrome, Hip Dysplasia, Patellar Luxation, Heart Murmurs, and some Eye Conditions.
