Owczarek Podhalanski Information
The Owczarek Podhalanski originated in Poland in the 1700's. It is thought that the Italian Bergamasco is this breeds ancestor, but it is more likely that its forebears would seem to be very similar sheepdog breeds of neighboring Czechoslovakia and Hungary.
Although large and heavy, this sheepdog breed is extremely agile and quick. The usual coloration is solid white, although cream is also found. Both straight hair and wavy hair occur in this breed. The Owczarek Podhalanski is able to withstand weather of its native Poland.
A placid nature is one of the key characteristics of this breed, and those prone to irritability are likely to be disqualified from the show ring. The Owczarek Podhalanski has recently been adopted for military and police duties in North America.
The Owczarek Podhalanski should be between 24-34 inches tall and weigh 100-150 pounds. Another name for the breed is the Tatra Mountain Sheepdog.
