Maltese Information
Back in the days when women wore long, full dresses with huge sleeves, they would often tuck a tiny dog in their sleeve or in one of the folds of their clothing. The Maltese was one of the most popular sleeve dogs from the time of Queen Elizabeth I. In 1607, Maltese were said to be the size of ferrets, which were another popular pet at the time.
The Maltese has a single coat that is long, flat and silky. Their color is usually solid white, however slight lemon colored markings are found on some. They should be about 10 inches tall and weigh between 4 to 6 pounds.
The Maltese is very prone to being sunburn in the area where their hair parts. They also cannot tolerate extremely cold temperatures and should wear a sweater when it's cold outside. During the winter months, they should only be allowed outside long enough to potty to avoid them getting too cold.
The Maltese can be snappy with children who are not well behaved. They can also be quite a chore to housebreak. They have a tendency to get spoiled very easily and will even become jealous of visitors.
Health problems include luxating patella, thyroid problems and liver shunt.
