Lowchen Information
The Lowchen originated in France and were very popular in Italy, Spain and Germany as early as the 1500's. Their popularity continued through the 1800's. After World War I and World War II, popularity diminished. By 1960 they were granted the title of rarest breed by Guinness Book of World Records. The breed nearly disappeared by the 19th century but tireless efforts by a Belgian breeder ensured the breed would continue.
The Lowchen is a small dog, standing at 12 to 14 inches at the shoulders. The untrimmed coat is very dense and soft. All colors and color combinations are seen. The Lowchen is a very low shedder.
They are very sensitive but also fearless. Lowchen tend to be very quick learners and even tend to enjoy their training. They do very well with children and other pets, however they tend to dominate the other pets, even much larger ones.
