Leonberger Information
It is believed that the Leonberger comes from a large Saint Bernard and a LandseerNewfoundland
Leonberger's served in armies during World War I and World War II. Most died in battle due to starvation. IN 1945, several German fanciers collected the remaining dogs and began breeding once again. In 1948, the Deutsche Club fur Leonberger Hunde was founded.
The Leonberger regained popularity in Europe and was imported into the United States in 1971. They have been used for guarding livestock, obedience, and tracking.
Leonberger do not require a lot of exercise. They love to be included in all family outings and are very adaptable to most any environment. They truly love to swim, hike and be trained to pull carts and sleds.
Males should be 28 to 32 inches tall, females 26 to 30 inches. Their coat is long and thick and can be sand, golden to red.
Health concerns with the Leonberger include Hip Dysplasia, addisons disease, entropion, ectropion, hypothyroidism and bloat.
