Lakeland Terrier Information
The Lakeland Terrier was originally bred in Cumberland. It is believed that the ancestors of the Lakeland Terrier are similar to those of the Border Terrier. There is evidence that the Lakeland was an offshoot of the Dandie Dinmont Terrier. It is also said that the Lakeland had some Fox Terrier and Airedale Terrier blood mixed in.
The Lakeland Terriers were kept by farmers in the mountain districts who would form a hunt with a couple of hounds and Lakeland Terriers. Their work was to destroy the foxes found raiding the sheepfolds. This was not done for sport, but more of a practical matter.
The color of these dogs did not matter to their owners, they were mainly bred for gameness at first. The coloring was secondary as long as the dogs were tough enough to withstand the punishment given by the fox in their rocky mountain lairs.
Lakeland Terriers adore their family and do very well with children. Some may be dog aggressive, however if raised with other dogs this usually isn't a problem. They should never be permitted off lead in an unfenced area since they will take off after any fleeing creature such as a rabbit or squirrel. Once on pursuit, they will ignore your calls for return.
Males should stand at 14.5 inches tall and weigh around 17 pounds, females slightly smaller. Their coat is hard and wiry in texture and can be blue, black, liver, red and wheaten.
