Kyi Leo® Information
The Kyi Leo® is the product of a mixture of Lhasa Apso and Maltese that occurred in the 1950's. All Kyi-Leo® dogs are decedents of the original dogs. Simply breeding a Lhasa Apso and a Maltese together today will not create a Kyi-Leo® by any means. The breed name is written with a registration mark (Kyi-Leo®), and no dog is permitted to carry the Kyi-Leo® name without the breed clubs permission.
The Kyi-Leo® name is derived from the Tibetan word for dog (Kyi) and Leo which is Latin for lion. The breed began in the 1950's, and it is not known why the breeding occurred. When the breeders saw the offspring, they decided to keep breeding them.
The Kyi Leo® has several good traits from both of their ancestors. They are not as fragile as the Maltese, their muzzle is a little longer and does not have the underbite that is seen in a lot of Lhasa Apso's.
The breed can be a tad shy with strangers, but they truly adore their families and are more than willing to romp around with dog-friendly children. They have excellent hearing, and are wonderful "alarm" dogs. They are not a breed that should ever be considered for outdoor living.
The only health concern is slipped Patella, which occurs in most small breeds.
The Kyi Leo® is mainly registered with the Kyi-Leo® Club, but some are also registered with the ARBA as well as the Kyi-Leo® Club, and can be shown in ARBA shows.
