Kerry Blue Terrier Information
The Kerry Blue Terrier was developed in the 1700's by Irish shepherds. Their names comes from the country of Kerry, in south western Ireland.
Kerry Blue Terriers were created by selectively crossing the
Irish Terrier and
Dandie Dinmont Terrier. They were originally used as a companion, farm dog, guard dog and hunting dog. They performed well on small game and birds, and did well retrieving from both land and water. Some were even used for herding sheep and cattle as well as police work.
The rise in popularity of the Kerry Blue Terrier was instant. Each show brought out increasing numbers of entries. The Blue Terrier Club of England is the supporting organization in England. The English and American breed standard for the Kerry Blue Terrier is nearly identical.
In 1926 a group of fanciers met at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show and organized the Kerry Blue Terrier Club of America.
Kerry Blue Terrier's should stand between 17 to 21 inches tall and weigh between 30 - 45 pounds. Their coat is soft, dense and wavy. Coloring can be any shade of blue gray, from deep slate to light blue. Puppies are born solid black.
Kerry Blue Terriers are good watchdogs but will not attack without provocation. They are great family dogs and love to be with their family. They need a great deal of socialization with other dogs as they can become dog aggressive easily. They rarely bark unnecessarily. They will need a confident owner and firm obedience training.
