Karelian Bear Dog
Pikimusta
The Spitz gradually evolved into a number of different breeds, each of those breeds performing some tasks essential to the survival of man and dog. The Karelian Bear Dog is mainly used to hunt bear and elk when they are available, although they have been used to hunt smaller game as well. They usually hunt alone rather than in packs, and they trail their prey silently. When the prey is located, the Karelian Bear Dog barks and scares the creature into a total stand-still.

The devastation resulting from war nearly caused the Karelian Bear Dog to die out. In the late 1930's, the Finnish Kennel Club restored the breed and they gained recognition by the FCI in 1945. Today, the Karelian Bear Dog is one of the most highly regarded breeds in their native land.
