Italian Hound Information
The Italian Hound originated in Italy in the 100's. The breed is descended from the early sight hounds, which were probably introduced to Italy by the Phoenicians, and scent hounds from Europe. During the Renaissance it was a popular hunting dog and has recently undergone a further revival in Italy.
The Italian Hound is strong and powerfully built, has a long, tapering muzzle which is convex when seen in profile, sloping downward to the nose.
A rough-coated form, known as Segugio Italiano a Pelo Forte, is identical in all respects other than coat.
The Italian Hound should be 20 and a half inches tall and weigh 40-62 pounds. Another name for the breed is the Segugio Italiano.
