Italian Greyhound Information
|
The Italian Greyhound is the smallest of all the gaze hounds. It is believed that they were dwarfed from gaze hounds to make better pets.
Though they were never extremely popular, by the middle ages the breed had become distributed throughout souther Europe and was a favorite of the 16th century Italians. They favored the miniature dogs, and the breed became known as the Italian Greyhound.
Though they may appear to be fragile due to their size, they are actually a very hardy breed. They adapt easily to most households and enjoy the company of children and other pets.
Italian Greyhounds should stand at 13 to 15 inches tall and have fine, glossy hair. Their colors can be any combination other than brindle or tan markings that would normally be seen on black and tan dogs.
In the extremely cold winter months, they will require a sweater when going outside to potty. During these times, they should never be allowed out in the cold for any longer than absolutely necessary since they do not have the body fat to keep themselves warm.
Health concerns with the Italian Greyhound include epilepsy, luxating patella and Progressive Retinal Atrophy. Keep in mind that the health issues mentioned can be avoided by getting your dog from a reputable breeder who properly screens for health issues prior to breeding.
