Hovawart Information
Hovawarts were used and bred by the Barons of Germany as a reliable watch dog and guardians of flocks. Although the breed is of very old ancestry, they did not survive as a breed but more as a type. The breed was resurrected by zoologist Dr. Kurt Konig, who began his work shortly after World War I.
Dr. Konig decided to revive the breed based on descriptions and drawings of the Hovawart from the middle ages. He searched for dogs from the Herz and Odenwald areas that resembled the original descriptions. Along with a few other breeders, he crossed these Hovawart-type dogs with German Shepherd Dogs, Kuvasz, Newfoundland, Leonberger, Bernese Mountain Dogs and an African hunting dog. In 1922, the first Hovawart litter was registered in Germany.
World War II put an end to breeding and a great deal of the dogs were lost or killed. In 1947 the remaining enthusiasts of the Hovawart joined together and created the German Hovawart Club.
Hovawarts first appeared in the United Kingdom in 1980 and have slowly increased in numbers. In 1982, they also formed a breed club.
