Greyhound Information
![]() |
The first knowledge of the Greyhound comes from the Tomb of Amten, in the Valley of the Nile which was regarded by Egyptologists as belonging to the Fourth Dynasty between 2900 and 2751 BC. The carvings in this tomb show dogs of the Greyhound type in three separate scenes. In two of those scenes, the Greyhound was attacking a deer. In the third scene the Greyhound was shown attacking an animal similar to the mountain goat.
Greyhounds came to America in the early 1500's by Spanish explorers to guard, hunt, intimidate and punish their enemies, which at that time were the Indians.
Greyhounds were among the earliest breeds in American dog shows. The catalog of the first Westminster Kennel Club dog show in 1877 includes 18 Greyhound entries.
Greyhounds have a definite prey instinct. They tend to chase anything that moves quickly. Due to this, many are not suitable to live with cats. They also should never be trusted off of a leash in an area that is not contained. They're sighthounds, and will chase any fleeing critter or object.
Greyhounds are very good with children and other pets. Many tend to become reliant on other pets for comfort in situations they're unsure about. Many Greyhounds are known for being afraid of storms and fireworks, so owners should be ready to deal with this if it's an issue with their Greyhound. There are safe medications that your veteranarian can prescribe to help comfort your Greyhound during these times.
Greyhounds do need exercise, but not quite as much as most people would expect from this breed. Long walks and one on one outdoor playtime should be enough to keep your Greyhound in shape and happy.
They Greyhound is not a breed that tolerates cold well. They should never be left outside in the cold temperatures and walks during the winter should be short. They don't have enough body fat to keep them warm, like other breeds.
Greyhounds should never be walked with a choke or prong collar. They don't have fat on their necks to protect their throat and a collar that puts so much pressure on their throats can cause serious problems for them. Be sure to use a collar that is specificially designed for Greyhounds.
The Greyhound coat is short and smooth and can by any color or combination of colors. Grooming is very minimal, bathing as needed and weekly brushing as well as nail trimming and ear cleaning.
