Giant German Spitz Information
The German Spitz descended directly from the Nordic herding dogs such as the Samoyed or Lapphund. They were most likely brought to northern Germany and Holland by Viking looters who plagued those areas during the middle ages.
Breeders were wanting to re-establish the larger type Spitz and a special arrangement was created with the Kennel Club of Great Britain. For a six month period in 1985, any Pomeranian with one or more of four imported Spitz dogs in their pedigrees could have their registries switched to being a German Spitz. After this six month period, the stud books were closed to any further double registrations. From this, the German Spitz was re-established in Great Britain and is now an official breed.
There are three sizes for this breed, the giant should be 16 to 17 inches tall and weigh 38 - 40 pounds, the standard should be 11 to 14 inches tall and weigh 23 - 31 pounds and the toy should be 9 to 11 inches tall and weigh 18 - 22 pounds.
