German Spaniel Information
In the 1800's, a group of hunters decided to recreate the Stober, which was a very versatile dog mentioned as far back as 1719. The Stober was known to have the scent following ability similar to the Bloodhound. The Germans obtained some dogs they found in Bavaria and bred them to other sporting spaniels that had a great passion for hunting. They produced the Wachtelhund, and the breed was officially recognized in 1903.
The German Spaniel (Wachtelhund) is a breed for hunters. Most of the general public does not even know the breed exists since they are not sold to those who do not hunt.
Several Wachtelhunds were brought into the United States in the late 1960's and early 1970's but were only bred a few times. In 1994, more were brought to the United States and the breed is now fairly popular with hunters in the US, however still unknown to the general public.
Males should stand at 18 to 21 inches tall, females 17 to 20 inches. They should weigh between 44 - 66 pounds.
