German Longhaired Pointer Information
The German Longhaired Pointer is considered to be the earliest of the German Pointers. Copperplate engravings and oil paintings from the 16th century show longhaired gundogs in diverse types of hunting situations, both bird and big game hunting. They were relatively small dogs with brown fur, broad heads and docked tails. At that time one hade not yet begun to use the dogs pointing ability. During the 16th and 17th century this gundog developed into a large, sturdy dog with narrow and slow field work, hunting with German Longhaired Pointer compared to today's hunting with spaniels.
The German Longhaired pointer was known in Germany in the 1870's. However at that time much experimentation was taking place with interbreeding to establish characteristics required for the sporting gundog scene.
Males should be 24-28 inches tall and females 23 to 26 inches. They should weigh around 66 pounds.
