German Shorthaired Pointer Information
The German Shorthaired Pointer was developed in Germany in the middle 1800's. The average German hunter could not afford several sporting dogs so they needed one all purpose hunting dog that had a good nose, was reliable in water retrieval, aggressive toward predators and very obedient. Several German and possibly French scent hounds were crossed with
Spanish Pointers, and those dogs bred to
English Pointers.
By 1911, the type was standardized and fame spread. The breed met the goal of being a versatile gun dog, excellent hunting dog with a keen nose and sharp eyes, webbed feet and very obedient. The German Shorthaired Pointer trails, points and retrieves on both land and water.
In the 1920's, the German Shorthaired Pointer arrived in America and by 1930 they were recognized by the American Kennel Club.
