French Spaniel Information
Heavy competition from other gundogs once brought the French Spaniel near extinction. The breed is now firmly reestablished thanks to a French priest who gathered the remaining French Spaniels in his kennels and rebuilt the lineages that are representatives of those we have now. There is some speculation that there were some out crosses of the breed.
The French Spaniel was barely known outside of France until the 1970's when it was introduced to Canada. They quickly gained in popularity due to their hunting skills. The Canadians formed a breed club to ensure the French Spaniel would continue to meet breed standards.
The French Spaniel is a very versatile hunting dog that will pursue, point, track and retrieve game on land or water. They are tough and determined and can adapt to all types of terrain.
Males should be 22 to 24 inches tall, females 21 to 23 inches. They should weigh between 50 - 60 pounds. They have a medium length weatherproof coat.
