French Bulldog Information
![]() |
The French Bulldog was bred mainly for pets and companions. They are remarkably intelligent, well behaved and also serve as great watchdogs.
There are two distinctive features in the French Bulldog. One is the bat ears and the other is the skull. Both of these features add to the unusual appearance of the French Bulldog.
French Bulldog's weight should not exceed 28 pounds. Their coat is fine, short and smooth. Coloring can be brindle, fawn, white or brindle and white. There are some other color combinations, however it has been found that dogs that carry these rare colorings are also carrying health defects. All white French Bulldogs, as well as black and white with no traces of brindle in the coat tend to carry the deafness gene. Liver colored dogs tend to have early blindness as well as juvenile cataracts. Blue colored dogs also carry the deaf gene as well as early blindness and dermatological diseases.
French Bulldogs cannot tolerate high heat and humidity and need to be kept inside with air conditioning during these temperatures. They have great difficulty breathing when it's too warm out and can easily overheat.
Due to the large heads of the French Bulldog, the majority of puppies must be born by cesarean section. Due to this, some French Bulldog puppies may cost a little more than others.
Wheat products are known to be flatulent producing in some French Bulldogs. Corn products and fillers that are an additional source of protein may increase your dogs energy levels and cause hives (skin rashes or irritations).
